The candids from the times
In an archive this size and scope, there’s a lot going on. These micro-collections are the photos of the around, before, on the way, after, during, instead of, picking up the pieces….all the off stage photos, grouped loosely by circumstance. They just tell all the other stories. Believe it or not (pssst: don’t tell the bands) it wasn’t ALL about them making all that noise on all those stages.

Bygones: The Opening
Well, that was awesome
The daylighting of a representational sample of our sprawling Bygone Photos collection was quite A LOT! So much fun, so much gratitude. Thank you to everyone that made this all possible! As noted, Bygones: The Show is up at Sleight of Hands // SODO until August 10th. Go see it again, send your friends down there - it was A LOT to get to here, we hope like crazy y'all enjoy it.

Anyone that's been in the game knows - live rock shows are 2% action / 98% everything else (mostly waiting). These are those stories.

Shadow Busks Broadway
Oh, those crazy kids!
Right, so, the Menudo of Metal (IE: the fine young men of Shadow) used to busk on Broadway (the main drag of Seattle’s Capitol Hill) in the mid-80’s. It was a hoot and a half.

Pain in the Grass
Mural Amphitheater 1991(ish)
The brainchild of Jeff Gilbert - champion of Metal and Hair and doer of many great rock&roll deeds - the "Pain in the Grass" summer series, outdoor rock shows of the era brought out the bangers and the hangers. Takeaways included: a multi-faceted music scene that extended well beyond grunge and that Seattle's rockers would not, in fact, turn to dust in the sun.

Old dog - Old tricks
Every once in awhile, post 1995, I'd dust off the camera and see if I still knew my way around live rock photos. Ok, yes, actually, that only happened once. But this happenstance really was the "last time" I ever shot live rock bands, and hey - the photos are alright. The bands I captured on film (again, yes, film, with negatives and everything. Even in '06. OK?): Himsa, The Cops, Pretty Girls Make Graves
